April Flowers (The Seasonal Series)

You’ve heard of April showers; well this blog is about April flowers and it’s the first in my seasonal wedding series. If you’re getting married in April and you’re passionate about keeping it seasonal then keep reading because this is for you! Hopefully these ideas will brighten up what can be known as a showery month! April sees the introduction of a wider variety of seasonal flowers too so your options broaden as the weather gets warmer.

Let’s kick off with blossom because who doesn’t love blossom trees and right now they are blossoming all over the place! The pink and white blooms with the sweet scent that carries through the air points towards (hopefully) better weather. I’m still yet to go and visit Japan in blossom season but I can just imagine the amazing spectacle of the streets lined with these beauties! And you can actually buy certain types of blossoms from your florist. They may not be quite the luscious, heavy heads you see on a cherry blossom tree but they do add a pretty and woody feel to your florals.

Another scented beauty is the stock (or matthiola) which comes in different shades of pink, purple, white and cream and works for either a brighter or more pastel colour scheme. They are tall and pointy in shape so they work well if you want to add some height to your arrangements and give them a more natural feel. Delphiniums although not scented, also add height as they are particularly tall and are a great choice if you have blue in your colour scheme, whether you want a bold blue or a paler shade. Blue is actually the least common colour in nature and so there are fewer blue flowers to choose from, particularly in Winter. They really are a striking and dramatic flower to use and are definitely on my list of favourites! Here’s some pictures from the ceremony from a wedding I did using both these flowers.

There’s a surprising number of flowers that don’t have a very distinctive scent but this really is a good time to get married because there are still so many scented flowers I haven’t even mentioned yet! I used to love walking to the train station on the way to my first florist job and spotting all the different seasonal flowers coming out each month. One I used to love seeing come out was the lilac (syringa) tree. These look amazing in a wedding bouquet if you are incorporating whites or lilacs in your colour scheme and they have a lovely perfume. Other scented flowers in the pastel colour range are phlox (lunaria) and sweet peas (lathyrus). Sweet peas aren’t the cheapest option considering they are such a small flower and work best in small jars/ bottles as they wilt quickly but they add a very natural look to your styling.

Although we often associate the poppy with Remembrance Day, they actually come out at this time of year. Like most wild flowers, they wilt very quickly once cut so you wouldn’t find them in a florist as a cut flower, hence the paper poppies in November. If you have your heart set on incorporating poppies in your wedding you can get fresh or dried poppy seed heads which look lovely or you could consider incorporating artificial poppies if you want the colour.

Bupleurum (don’t ask me how to pronounce it because I’ve heard it said in various ways), is a flower you may have seen in the garden but perhaps goes unnoticed. Some may consider it a foliage rather than a flower as it is green/ yellow. It’s what we florists would call a ‘filler flower’ because it has smaller headed flowers on and fills in the gaps of an arrangement nicely. This is a great flower to include if you love wild and natural designs and want something that looks like it’s been picked out the garden.

Of course some other Spring favourites like tulips and daffodils will still be in season and add plenty of colour to your arrangements. If you’re getting married at a venue with Spring bulbs planted in the grounds then this will really fit in with your surroundings and make for some amazing outdoor pictures, weather permitting!

I hope you’ve picked up some ideas for your Spring florals and are feeling inspired. If you need any more help with ideas and want to chat further, feel free to get in touch to book a consultation.

Happy planning!
